# Apple Intelligence reaches China with iOS 27.3: Qwen inside, the new Siri left out

> Apple says developer testing in China starts November 4 and the public gets Apple Intelligence in December with iOS 27.3, with Alibaba's Qwen built into Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. The AI Siri shown at WWDC 2026 isn't part of this phase, and neither are Macs or iPads.

Apple Intelligence is finally coming to iPhones in mainland China. In a release on its China Newsroom dated October 31, Apple says the features can be tested in the iOS developer beta from **November 4**. Users get them in **December**, when iOS 27.3 ships, and Apple has not given a day. Some features use Alibaba's **Qwen** models alongside Apple's own.

Why it matters: China is one of Apple's biggest iPhone markets, and it has been missing Apple Intelligence while the rest of the world got it. This rollout gets most of the existing feature set to Chinese users. The headline feature from WWDC 2026, the new AI Siri, still isn't included.

## Timeline

| Date | What happens (per Apple) |
|---|---|
| November 4 | Features available in the latest iOS developer beta |
| December 2026 | Public release with iOS 27.3 (no specific day given) |
| Later, no date | Other platforms, "once necessary approvals are obtained" |

MacRumors' Joe Rossignol notes that a November 4 release in China probably means the beta appears on Tuesday, November 3, in the US because of the time difference.

## Where Qwen fits

Apple says its own generative models power Apple Intelligence in China. It has also partnered with Alibaba to add Qwen to some features: **Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence**, including understanding text and images. Users access Qwen by signing in with a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple. In Writing Tools, Apple says Qwen can also write new text from scratch through Compose.

## What's included

Based on Apple's release, the China rollout covers:

- **Live Translation** in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, plus in-person conversations through supported AirPods
- **Writing Tools**: rewrite, proofread, summarize, and Compose via Qwen
- **Visual Intelligence**: identify objects and places through the iPhone camera
- **Photos**: Clean Up, natural-language search, and Memory Movies made from a text description
- **Genmoji**
- **Mail**: Priority Messages, summaries and Smart Replies; **Messages**: Smart Replies
- **Notifications**: summaries, Priority Notifications and a Reduce Interruptions Focus
- **Notes and Phone**: summaries of audio recordings and call transcripts
- **Siri**: Type to Siri, better handling of stumbled-over requests, context kept between requests, and Qwen for knowledge questions and questions about photos and documents such as PDFs and presentations

## Which devices

According to Apple, the features need an **iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 or later, or iPhone Air**. MacRumors also summarizes support as iPhone 15 Pro and newer.

For Live Translation, Apple lists **AirPods 5, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 or later, and AirPods Max 2**. They need the latest firmware and must be paired with a supported iPhone.

Language setup matters. Apple's release and MacRumors both list English and Simplified Chinese as the required language settings for the iPhone and Siri. Apple also says some Visual Intelligence features may be limited by language or region.

## What's missing

- **The new AI Siri.** Apple says Siri AI and the other next-generation Apple Intelligence features it announced at WWDC 2026 aren't part of this release.
- **Image Playground.** MacRumors reports it isn't coming to China with iOS 27.3.
- **Mac, iPad and other devices.** Apple says these will follow only after it receives the necessary approvals. It gave no timeline.

## What to do

If you're an iOS developer serving users in China, the November 4 beta is your first chance to test how your app behaves with Writing Tools, Genmoji and notification summaries on Chinese-market devices. For buyers, it's iPhone-only for now. An iPhone 15 (non-Pro) or older won't get it. Anyone waiting on the new Siri or on Mac support should watch for the next round of approvals, since Apple hasn't said when either will arrive.
