# Claude can now read your bank accounts through Plaid. What Personal Finance sees, keeps and can't do

> Anthropic's Personal Finance beta lets paying US Claude users link bank and card accounts read-only for spending summaries, bill calendars and fee spotting. It sees up to 24 months of transactions, hub chats aren't used for training, and unlinking a bank doesn't erase figures already in your chats.

**Anthropic** launched **Personal Finance** in **Claude** on **November 5**, a beta that lets subscribers connect bank, credit-card and other accounts through **Plaid** and then ask Claude about their money in plain language. Access is read-only: Anthropic says Claude can't move, manage or invest funds. The feature is rolling out gradually to US subscribers on the **Pro, Max and Ultra** plans, on the web, the desktop app and the iOS and Android apps, according to Unite.AI and Decrypt.

Why it matters: this is the first time Claude gets a standing, structured feed of something as sensitive as your transaction history, and the details of what it can see, what's kept and what happens when you disconnect are spread across an announcement and a help page. OpenAI added similar read-only Plaid bank connections to ChatGPT in May, Decrypt notes, so the two biggest consumer chatbots now both want to sit on top of your bank data.

## Who can use it

| | Details (per Unite.AI and Decrypt) |
|---|---|
| Plans | Pro, Max, Ultra (not Free, Team or Enterprise) |
| Region | United States only |
| Apps | Web, Claude Desktop, iOS, Android |
| Connection | Plaid; you choose which accounts to share and Claude never sees your bank password |
| Linked institutions | Up to 16 |
| History | Up to 24 months of transactions from approved accounts |
| Status | Beta, gradual rollout |

## What Claude can see and do

Decrypt reports that, for approved accounts, Claude can see balances, credit limits, account names and types, the last four digits of account numbers, and transactions. For investment, loan and card accounts, Unite.AI says it reads balances and credit limits but **not** holdings, trades, interest rates or loan terms.

With that, you can ask it to:

- total spending by category and compare months,
- flag duplicate charges, unexpected fees and bills that are creeping up,
- explain terms such as APR or interest charges,
- build weekly spending charts, a calendar of upcoming bills, and widgets on a Personal Finance dashboard.

Anthropic says the feature isn't designed to give investment advice, and Decrypt reports the company describes it as a first step while it explores partnerships with licensed professionals and regulated financial firms. Anthropic also says there are no ads or sponsored recommendations in Personal Finance.

## Privacy and data handling

- **Training:** conversations inside the Personal Finance hub are not used to train Anthropic's models. Anything you discuss *outside* the hub follows your normal Claude privacy settings, per Unite.AI. If you paste the same numbers into a regular chat, the hub exemption doesn't cover it.
- **Disconnecting doesn't delete everything.** Unlinking a bank stops future reads, but figures already in chats, artifacts and shared links stay until you delete them. Removing your last linked bank resets the dashboard and permanently deletes its widgets, budget settings and setup answers.
- **Open questions:** Decrypt notes it isn't fully clear how Anthropic tracks or uses this data beyond the training exclusion.

## Known limits

Per Unite.AI:

- Linked accounts can't be used in scheduled tasks, Cowork or Claude Code, and may not work inside projects.
- Data exports don't yet include saved dashboards.
- Balances can be a day or two old, and an account connected through two logins may be counted twice.
- If a bank can't be read, spending totals silently leave it out.
- Claude can make mistakes; Anthropic advises checking figures against your bank's records.

## The startup row

The launch drew a complaint from Anthony Pompliano, who runs a competing app called Silvia. Decrypt reports he alleges Anthropic staff approached his engineers in April seeking details of how the product was built, and he called Personal Finance a wrapper around Claude. These are his allegations, not established facts.

## Should you turn it on?

It's useful if you want a quick, conversational read on where your money goes and don't already use a budgeting app. Before linking anything:

1. **Share only the accounts you need.** Plaid lets you pick; a single checking account and main card cover most spending questions.
2. **Keep money talk inside the hub** if you care about the training exclusion.
3. **Treat totals as estimates** given the lag and double-counting caveats, and confirm anything you'll act on with your bank.
4. **Clean up when you leave:** after unlinking, delete chats, artifacts and shared links that contain your figures.

Watch for Anthropic to widen availability beyond the US, add dashboard exports, and say more about data retention as the beta matures.
