# Alphabet lost about $500 billion in a day. The AI spending scare, measured

> Search growth slowed, capex hit $51 billion a quarter, and investors finally asked the question Big Tech has dodged all year — when does the AI build-out pay for itself?

Alphabet's Class A shares closed Thursday at $283.82, down 12.64% — a drop the Wall Street Journal put at roughly **$499.8 billion in market value**, the second-largest single-day loss for any company in stock market history.

The trigger was a quarter that, on paper, looked strong. The real story is what investors decided to stop forgiving.

## The numbers that moved the stock

| Metric (Q3 2026) | Figure | Why it mattered |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $127.6B, +25% YoY | Strong growth, but below Wall Street's estimate |
| Google Search growth | 12% | Down from 17% the previous quarter |
| Capital expenditures | ~$51.4B in one quarter | Mostly data centers and AI compute |
| Share price move | −12.64% | ≈ $500B of value erased |

Revenue growing 25% would normally be a celebration. But the market's attention was on two lines: Search, the business that funds everything else, slowing sharply; and a capex bill now running above $50 billion every three months.

That combination raises the uncomfortable question: **are AI answers eating Google's ad business faster than AI infrastructure can replace it?** A search query answered by an AI summary is a query with fewer ad clicks. Alphabet has argued the opposite — that AI features increase usage — but a five-point deceleration in a single quarter is the first hard data point that bears are able to point to.

## It wasn't just Google

The sell-off spread. Amazon fell about 7% in premarket trading Friday after its own results disappointed, and Intel dropped more than 25% premarket, blaming a supply-chain disruption and softer PC demand.

Meanwhile, the rest of the week showed how much money is still pouring in:

- **Meta** said it may raise up to **$95 billion in stock** — roughly $35 billion through underwritten offerings and $60 billion through an at-the-market program using newly created non-voting Class C shares — to fund AI infrastructure. Its 2026 capex guidance sits at $135–145 billion.
- **SpaceX** agreed to roughly **$40 billion in lease payments** for data-center equipment, including AI processors, from an entity managed by Apollo Global Management.
- **Microsoft** disclosed Azure's actual quarterly revenue for the first time: **$33.2 billion, up 48%**, about 36% of a record $92.3 billion quarter.

## What this tells us

**1. The market is now grading AI spending on a curve.** Microsoft can point to Azure growing 48% as the return on its spend. Alphabet's cloud business is growing too, but its most important number — Search — went the wrong way. Capex that's visibly funded by AI revenue gets a pass; capex that coincides with a slowing core business does not.

**2. Financing is getting creative.** Meta issuing a new non-voting share class and SpaceX leasing compute rather than buying it are signs that even the richest companies are looking beyond cash flow to fund the build-out. That's not a crisis, but it's a shift worth watching.

**3. Disclosure is becoming a competitive weapon.** Microsoft breaking out Azure revenue now lets investors compare it directly against AWS and Google Cloud. Expect pressure on Alphabet to show more granular evidence that AI Overviews and Gemini are monetizing.

## What to watch next

- **Search growth next quarter.** One slow quarter is a data point; two is a trend.
- **Capex guidance revisions.** If any hyperscaler trims 2027 plans, it will ripple straight into Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom and the memory makers.
- **Meta's offering.** How quickly the at-the-market program draws down — and at what price — will be a live read on investor appetite for AI-funded dilution.

The AI boom isn't over. But this week was the clearest signal yet that investors want receipts, not just roadmaps.
