# AMD's data center sales nearly doubled to $8.5 billion, and it guides to $17 billion next quarter. The catch is cash

> AMD reported record Q3 2026 revenue of $13.4 billion, up 45%, as MI450 GPUs and Helios racks started shipping to Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Oracle. It forecasts about $17 billion for Q4, but free cash flow fell to $554 million as it built nearly $3 billion of inventory.

**AMD** posted record revenue of **$13.38 billion** for the third quarter of 2026 on November 3, up 45% from a year earlier and 16% from the second quarter. Most of the growth came from data centers, where revenue rose 97% to **$8.55 billion**. The company also forecast fourth-quarter revenue of about **$17 billion**, plus or minus 3%.

Why it matters: this was the first quarter that included AMD's **Instinct MI450** GPUs and its first **Helios** rack-scale systems, which are its direct answer to Nvidia's full-rack AI servers. The Q4 forecast implies another jump of about 27% in a single quarter, so AMD is saying the AI ramp is speeding up. Its cash flow statement shows what that ramp costs up front.

## The quarter in numbers

All figures come from AMD's earnings release, filed with the SEC.

| Metric | Q3 2026 | Change vs Q3 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $13.38B | +45% |
| Data Center | $8.55B | +97% |
| Client (PC chips) | $2.95B | +7% |
| Gaming | $773M | −40% |
| Embedded | $1.11B | +29% |
| Gross margin (GAAP / non-GAAP) | 54% / 56% | +2 points each |
| Diluted EPS (GAAP / non-GAAP) | $1.46 / $2.09 | +95% / +74% |
| Free cash flow | $554M | down from $1.53B |

The Data Center segment earned **$2.88 billion** of operating income, which is more than the whole company's GAAP operating income of $2.83 billion. Client and Gaming together fell 8% to $3.72 billion.

## How it compares with expectations

Going into the report, Bloomberg's consensus called for about **$13 billion** in revenue, **$1.97** in adjusted EPS and **$8.19 billion** from data centers, according to Yahoo Finance. AMD beat all three, by about $380 million on revenue and 12 cents on EPS. The consensus also expected gaming to fall 49% to $655 million. It fell less than that, but a 40% drop is still steep. Yahoo cited higher memory and storage prices as a drag on console and gaming demand.

The PC side carried a warning sign from the wider market. Yahoo noted that **Intel** beat its own Q3 estimates last week but guided Q4 to $15–16 billion, well below analyst expectations, after a worse-than-expected PC market decline. Intel's stock then fell nearly 29%. AMD's client revenue still grew 7%.

## Who is using MI450 and Helios

AMD says data center growth came from strong **EPYC** server CPU demand and the MI450 launch. It names **Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure** as already running workloads on its first Helios racks, which pair MI450 GPUs with 6th-gen EPYC CPUs. AMD also said HPE customer **Vultr** will deploy the first Helios systems built by HPE.

CEO **Lisa Su** said AMD expects growth to accelerate in Q4 as it scales production of Helios and **"Venice."** AMD described Q3 as a quarter with revenue "exceeding the high end of our guidance."

## The cash flow catch

Profits rose sharply, but cash did not keep pace:

- **Operating cash flow** was $1.20 billion, down from $2.37 billion in Q2 and $1.79 billion a year earlier.
- **Free cash flow** was $554 million, a 4% margin, down from $1.56 billion in Q2.
- **Inventory** grew by about $3.0 billion in the quarter and stood at **$11.46 billion**, up from $7.92 billion at the end of 2025.
- **Receivables** used another $1.93 billion of cash, partly offset by a $2.31 billion rise in payables.
- **Capital spending** was $648 million, compared with $258 million a year earlier.

AMD's release does not explain why free cash flow fell. The pattern does fit a company stocking up on chips and rack components ahead of a much bigger Q4. Cash and short-term investments still rose to $15.8 billion, and AMD reported no buybacks this quarter.

## What to watch

- **The $17 billion promise.** At the midpoint, that is about 66% growth year over year. Investors will be checking whether the inventory turns into Helios revenue in December, or whether it piles up.
- **Margins as racks scale.** AMD guides Q4 non-GAAP gross margin to about 55%, a point below Q3. Watch whether it keeps slipping as Helios becomes a bigger share of sales.
- **PCs and consoles.** Data center now drives the company, but a weaker PC market and the gaming slump are the main risks to the rest of the business.
