Anthropic's amended IPO filing: $17 billion in Q3 revenue, a swing to an operating loss, and $895 billion in compute promises

Anthropic's updated S-1 shows revenue up about 12x year over year but slowing quarter to quarter, a swing to a $567 million operating loss on short-term compute, and nearly $900 billion in infrastructure commitments. Here's what the numbers say ahead of its Nasdaq listing.

Anthropic filed an amended S-1 on November 2 that adds its third-quarter results to the IPO prospectus: about $16.96 billion in revenue for the three months to September 30, and an operating loss of $567 million after an operating profit of $974 million the quarter before, according to Reuters and Business Insider. The filing also puts the company's total compute and infrastructure commitments at about $895.4 billion.

Why it matters: this is the most detailed look yet at the economics of a frontier AI lab that is about to be priced by public markets. Revenue is still growing at a pace almost no company of this size has seen, but the filing shows how quickly compute costs can erase a profit, and how much of the future is already spoken for. Reuters reports that some institutional investors are weighing a valuation near $1.5 trillion, down from roughly $2 trillion discussed earlier.

The quarter, in numbers

Figures from the amended filing as reported by Reuters, Business Insider and PPC Land:

Metric Q3 2026 Comparison
Revenue $16.96B $11.56B in Q2 2026; $1.38B in Q3 2025
Quarter-on-quarter growth ~47% growth slowed sharply, per Reuters
Year-on-year growth ~12x per Business Insider
Operating result –$567M loss +$974M operating income in Q2
Net loss $23.29B $66.3B in Q2 (Reuters)
Compute and infrastructure charges $9.9B about 4x a year earlier (Business Insider)
Customers paying $100K+ a year 11,900+ 1,500+ at end of 2025 (Reuters)

For the nine months to September 30, PPC Land reports revenue of $33.24 billion and a net loss of $104.04 billion. Cash and cash equivalents stood at about $95.6 billion, or about $131.8 billion including short-term investments.

Why it lost money this quarter

The filing attributes the operating loss primarily to $5.0 billion of compute bought under short-term commitments, per Business Insider, along with about $2 billion of non-cash charges from a donation-matching program in which employees pledge equity to charity and the company matches with non-voting shares (PPC Land puts the exact figure at $1.96 billion). Reuters notes the extra short-term compute lowered how much revenue Anthropic earned per dollar of compute compared with Q2.

The much larger net loss is a different animal. Reuters says it includes non-operating items tied to Anthropic's bonds that convert into shares. Those are accounting marks, not cash spent running the business, which is why the operating line is the better guide to underlying economics.

Whether that $5 billion was a one-off scramble for capacity or a recurring cost of meeting demand is the key question investors will press on.

The $895 billion question

The commitments figure dwarfs everything else in the filing. According to Reuters and PPC Land:

  • About $69.8 billion comes due in the 12 months after September 30, 2026.
  • About $447.5 billion, nearly half, is expected to be incurred before the end of 2030.
  • Partners include Amazon and Google, per Reuters.

The filing also flags a new kind of risk. Some compute partners rely on outside financing to build capacity, and Anthropic warns that if that financing becomes unavailable or more expensive, contracted capacity could be delayed, repriced or reduced, Reuters reports. Reuters places that warning against broader investor unease over debt-fuelled AI buildouts and widening technology bond spreads.

What analysts are saying

Matt Kennedy of Renaissance Capital told Reuters, "I wouldn't say these results are worrisome," while expecting slower growth and margin pressure to weigh on the final valuation. Principals at venture firm Neostellar told Reuters investors will focus on when the contracted capacity comes online and when payments start, relative to revenue growth.

What to watch

  • Pricing and size. Anthropic plans to list Class A shares on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker ANT, per PPC Land, and Reuters says formal marketing to investors begins next week. No price range or share count had been disclosed as of the filing, Business Insider notes.
  • Q4 compute mix. Another quarter of heavy short-term compute would suggest the operating loss is structural, not a blip.
  • Partner financing. Any sign that a data-center partner is struggling to raise money now has a direct line to Anthropic's capacity, by the company's own account.
